Namecheap.com
Whether you enjoy turn based games or a good RTS, 2018 will present some interesting options. Naturally, the brace of current 4X games like Civilization 6, Stellaris and Endless Space 2 will continue to receive expansions and updates throughout the year, but there are a bunch of new titles to look forward to besides.

Here are the ones we're most excited about, and a few that we can expect to see appearing in 2019 and beyond. Here are Top 20 Best Strategy and War Games PC 2018:

1. Frozen Synapse 2
Frozen Synapse was a sleek, streamlined tactical squad combat game released in 2011. A tight variety of weapon types and smart asynchronous multiplayer helped it to stand out, now the sequel plans to couch these combat encounters in a procedurally generated city populated by embattled corporations.

As in the original game, you give orders to your neon operatives in five second bursts by drawing out pathing and aiming instructions, then you press 'go' and watch your orders play out. The core combat is proven, but we'll have to see how the addition of an overworld relic-hunting metagame builds on those fine foundations. The digitised cut-glass cities already look gorgeous.

2. A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia
Total War fans waiting for a return to history could be in for a treat as The Creative Assembly debut the "Saga" series. It's a sizeable Total War game with a much tighter focus on a particular flashpoint in history, namely the aftermath of Alfred the Great's victory against the Vikings at the battle of Edington.

Three factions are poised to fight for control of the British isles, but the country is rendered at a much greater scale than we've seen before in a Total War. Take a look at the map at the end of the video below and you can see how the game intends to zoom in and explore the territory in detail.

3. BattleTech
We like everything we've seen so far of this turn based mech combat game. You spend half of your time engaging enemies with a squad of highly customisable mechs, and half managing your mercenary organisation in a tough universe where betrayal is a constant risk.

Learn more in our interview at the PC Gaming Show, where we learned more about your home base and the strategic metagame that binds your missions together. BattleTech/MechWarrior creator Jordan Weisman is onboard, so long-term fans of the BattleTech universe can expect a detailed and authentic take on the universe.

4. Into the Breach
It is a good year to be a mech fan. Into the Breach, from the developers of FTL, doesn't have an official release date yet even though from what we've played it could come out tomorrow and be brilliant. It's a turn based tactical combat game set over a tightly limited turn count.

In each encounter you have to do is survive an onslaught of giant creatures burrowing up from beneath the planet's surface, but where many strategy games rely on dice rolls and happenstance to generate drama and tactical dilemmas, Into the Breath shows you everything.

You know exactly how and where each enemy is going to strike next, and how much damage they will do. Then it's up to you to craft a perfect series of attacks to push enemies around the battlefield and blow them up for sweet XP.

5. Phoenix Point
The creator of the original X-Com, Julian Gollop, is returning to the genre he helped create with an exciting modern take on the formula. Bodypart targeting, mutating enemies and a grittier look all help separate Phoenix Point from Firaxis' recent XCOM reboots.

Soldiers will have willpower and endurance stats to model how stressed they feel when they get shot by alien crabs with miniguns for arms, and there are multiple human factions with their own tech preferences. Of course you can expect to repurpose crab tech for your own purposes, in true X-Com fashion.

6. Age of Empires: Definitive Edition
This could be a dream remaster of one of the best loved PC series ever. The art has been updated to look good at modern resolutions, the population cap has been increased, you can zoom out, pathfinding has been adjusted, you can attack-move, there's an "enhanced orchestral soundtracK" and more.

The package will include the original campaign and the scenario editor. The only drawback is the game is releasing "exclusively to Window 10 PCs" according to the Microsoft Store page. Hopefully we'll see it coming to a wider range of PCs later.

7. Wargroove
This will look very familiar to Advance War players, but we're sorely lacking bright turn based tactical games like this.

Wargroove's four factions are depicted in vivid pixel art, and include exciting unit types like 'dog' and a very excited archer. Careful positioning and adjacency bonuses are everything in the Advance War formula.

8. Abandon Ship
An FTL-esque oceanic romp set in a procedurally generated seascape full of pirates and the odd tentacle monster. You order your crew around your vessel during sea battles as they load cannons, fix holes in the hub, and fend off boarding attempts.

Meanwhile you have to target your enemy using a range of attacks, from cannons to chain shot that ruins sails. Between battles you navigate between ports to take on missions, earn bounties and upgrade your ship.

9. Phantom Doctrine
If the phrase 'Cold War XCOM' piques your interest, keep an eye on this tactical squad game in which you command a team of agents. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to sabotage opposing nations, recover intel and flip enemy agents.

Stealth is preferable of course, but you can charge in with a machinegun if the circumstances warrant. There is no in-game footage yet, but the first screenshots are full of moody lighting and period outfits.

10. Pit People
In this fast-paced, turn-based, co-op adventure you'll quest and explore, find awesome loot, customize your fighters, and recruit strange species. Come master your destiny in this strategic game of positioning.

11. Command & Conquer
Three years before StarCraft, the Command & Conquer franchise was the forerunner of real-time strategy games for PC. If you or friends are just getting into RTS games, the Command & Conquer series is the perfect starting point.

The highly addicting PC game series has both a single player and multiplayer skirmish mode. Players race to collect resources, build new structures and train new units to fight one another. Don't worry, you get plenty of time to do this before you’re in any real danger.

The Command & Conquer series boasts one of the highest ratings for a RTS PC game in existence. Though later sequels were not as well received.

12. Age of Empires III
Since its beginning, The Age of Empires series was the RTS game that gave players the most choices for factions. In Age of Empires III, players can choose fourteen different empires.

Unlike other real-time strategy games on the list, Age of Empires III features real life countries with actual historical military units like samurais. You start off with a civilization that has to go through the dark ages, researching technologies and then eventually opening up trade routes. From there, you’ll build up a massive army to take over parts of Europe and Asia.

Age of Empires is a great series for anyone wanting a little more realism to their game. It isn’t as quickly paced as other games, instead focusing on the development of your units and the civilization.

13. Supreme Commander
Supreme Commander is a real-time strategy game series with an immersive gameplay aspect. It has a full 180-degree aerial view that allows you to zoom out to see the entire map or get up close and personal.

For some, the game may be too intensive and unit heavy. Players must protect their irreplaceable construction unit called the “Armored Command Unit," all while racing for resources and building up armies. The game is fast-paced and puts you right in the action. You’re forced to consider your choices immediately such as researching new technologies, scouting the field and training troops.

Though the graphics of the Supreme Commander series aren't like the others on the list, it does offer large area scaled warfare and situational awareness. The game has received high praise from many reviewers and players worldwide.

14. Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes is an award-winning RTS series that features a World War II setting. Relic, the studio behind the game, focused on building the game's realism based on historical locations and even how soldiers interact.

Beautiful graphics, destructible environments and rag doll physics make Company of Heroes one of the most intricately designed RTS games on the list. It’s simple to play and isn’t as strategically heavy as other games.

The Company of Heroes series is best World War II RTS game to date and is even more realistic than the other games on the list.

15. StarCraft II
Debatably the most popular RTS game series in existence, StarCraft II is the sequel to the 1998 hit game StarCraft. It boasts a single player mode of over 70 missions with three different campaigns, huge multiplayer content and community made arcade modes.

Unlike Command & Conquer, StarCraft II relies on heavy intense strategies to counter balance your opponents. Each one of the three factions that you play as has their set of pros and cons. Blizzard (the company behind the game) has a tendency of making their games easy to play, but hard to master.

StarCraft requires more time-sensitive strategically made decisions with the constant feeling of urgency. If you’re up for a challenge and faster paced gameplay, StarCraft is the choice.

16. Stronghold
The Stronghold series may be one of the most personal real-time strategy games. The award winning game has players bearing the harshness of medieval times and finding a balance in military and economy.

Stronghold’s gameplay dynamics are introspective. Players take hold of a kingdom, where they must make decisions in maintaining a civilization’s attitude. For example, focusing on recreational places, which make your peasants happy, but lazy. On the other side of the spectrum, you must prepare them for war with cruel conditioning.

Stronghold may be the best relaxing RTS game since it focuses on you taking time in building a relationship that needs happiness and warfare.

17. Total War: Warhammer
Total War: Warhammer takes place in the realm of the War Hammer franchise, allowing for massive scale attacks on enemy units, with factions such as dwarves, vampires and orcs. If you’re experienced in RTS games, this is the one for you.

Total War: Warhammer is overwhelming. You can command a unit count of around 2,000. The humungous battles require you to zoom out, focusing on different platoons and forcing you to utilize different strategies and attack patterns.

The Total War series is more strategy than resource collecting and building. You’ll be focused on waves of different infantries, commanding different attacks and be right there in the battle.

18. World In Conflict
World In Conflict is a Cold War era unit intensive RTS strategy game. It focuses heavily on mission-based gameplay, capturing different command points and switching formations while in constant battle.

There is zero breathing space in World In Conflict. You’ll have other commanders giving orders in-game while you await for various backup units and face constant attacks. Though the game throws you right in the action, it helps build up your knowledge of strategizing, so you can overtake areas.

World In Conflict is perfect for any gamer that wants immediate action

19. Star Wars: Empire at War
If you like real-time strategy games, but want more of a familiar setting, Star Wars: Empire at War is the perfect game for you. Any Star Wars and RTS fan will love experiencing the same movie battles while gaming.

Star Wars: Empire at War features a campaign mode where players can either choose from the Rebel Alliance to The Empire. Players will be put in scenarios like protecting Emperor Palpatine, destroying the Death Star or completely taking another faction from the campaign map. Skirmish mode resembles classic RTS elements with a twist: You can either stick to land or battle in space.

20. Halo Wars 2
Based off the ever-popular first person shooter games, Halo Wars 2 is an epic real-time strategy game that faces you off with space marines and aliens. Everything you love about the Halo series is included in this RTS (like the Warthog jeep and laser sword wielding Elites).

Similar to Command & Conquer, Halo Wars 2 will also have you gathering resources, building units and attacking. Developers focused on creating a story and paying attention to detail in every graphic and action sequence in the game.
